Scarlet Rainbowfish (often referring to the Glossolepis dorityi or the deep red Glossolepis incisus):
-
Appearance: Known for its stunning, brilliant red or scarlet coloration. Males develop a much deeper, more intense red and a taller body shape as they mature, while females are generally more silver or olive-toned.
-
Size: Grows to approximately 3 – 5 inches (8 – 12 cm).
-
Lifespan: Typically lives for 5 – 8 years with proper aquarium management.
-
Water Temperature: Prefers a warm environment between 24°C – 28°C (75°F – 82°F).
-
pH Level: Prefers slightly alkaline water, ideally between 7.0 – 8.0.
-
Diet: Omnivorous. They eat almost anything offered, including high-quality flakes, floating pellets, and frozen foods like bloodworms, tubifex, and brine shrimp.
-
Temperament: Active, energetic, and peaceful. They are schooling fish and feel most secure when kept in groups.
-
Tank Setup: Requires a spacious tank (minimum 30–50 gallons) due to their active swimming nature. They look best in a planted tank with dark substrate and plenty of open space in the center.
Pro Tip: To maintain their vibrant scarlet color, provide a varied diet rich in carotenoids and ensure your water is hard and alkaline, as they can lose their “glow” in soft, acidic water.
